Meet The Team

Dr. Jan-Hendrik Pöhls

Associate Professor

Jan has joined the Department of Chemistry as an assistant professor at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. He is cross-appointed to the Physics Department. In July 2025, Jan was promoted to associate professor. He received his BSc and MSc in Materials Science and Engineering from Kiel University in Germany. For his PhD, he moved to Halifax where he worked under Dr. Mary Anne White. Before joining UNB, Jan conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Alberta (Dr. Arthur Mar), McGill University (Dr. Bradley Siwick), and  McMaster University (Dr. Yurij Mozharivskyj). When Jan is not in the lab, he is going running, hiking, or exploring the farmer's market.

Graduate and Undergraduate Students

Emily Doucet
Master's Student

Hi, I’m Emily! I’m a first-year graduate student in the Pöhls group, where I study the synthesis and doping of thermoelectric and layered chalcogenide materials. My work focuses on understanding how composition and structure affect their electronic and thermal transport properties.

I’m a member of the cross country and track and field team and when I’m not in the lab, you’ll likely find me running on the track or hitting the elliptical at the Currie Centre. Outside of athletics, I love drinking coffee and getting lost in a good book!

Noah Losier

Summer student

Hi, my name is Noah and I am a fourth-year honors student studying the synthesis and properties of rare earth and transition metal dichalcogenides for thermoelectric applications.

Outside of academics, I enjoy volunteering with Saint John Ambulance for community events and refereeing ice hockey in Frederiction, as well as making music with the UNB Concert Band and reading fantasy novels!

Kylie Spadoni
Summer Student

Hi, my name is Kylie and I'm a Biology-Chemistry student at UNB! My research in the Pohls group focuses on the synthesis and purification of novel complex chalcogenide materials! Outside of the lab, I enjoy spending time with friends, listening to music, and playing with my two cats. I'm also passionate about STEM outreach and helping young students get excited about science!

Max Miller

Summer Student

My name is Max, and I'm a fourth-year Biochemistry student at the University of New Brunswick! In the lab, I work on characterizing the structure and electrical properties of novel doped transition metal dichalcogenides across different compositions. Outside the lab, you'll usually find me in the greenhouse tending to my plants or laughing the loudest in the movie theatre!
