Meet The Team

Dr. Jan-Hendrik Carroll-Pöhls

Assistant Professor

Fritz Grein Science Research Recipient

Jan has joined the Department of Chemistry as an assistant professor at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Jan received his BSc and MSc in Materials Science and Engineering from Kiel University in Germany. For his PhD, he moved to Halifax where he worked under Dr. Mary Anne White. Before joining UNB, Jan conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Alberta (Dr. Arthur Mar), McGill University (Dr. Bradley Siwick), and  McMaster University (Dr. Yurij Mozharivskyj). When Jan is not in the lab, he is going running, hiking, or exploring the farmer's market.

Undergraduate Students

Emily Doucet
Undergraduate Honours Researcher

Hi, I’m Emily! I’m a fourth-year undergraduate student in the Pöhls group, where I’m working on my Honours project focused on synthesizing and doping transition metal dichalcogenides in terms of renewable energy applications.

I’m a member of the cross country and track and field team and when I’m not in the lab, you’ll likely find me running on the track or hitting the elliptical at the Currie Centre. Outside of athletics, I love drinking coffee and getting lost in a good book!

James Schurman
Undergraduate CHEM3009 Researcher

James is a curious and driven third-year biochemistry researcher specializing in the synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides using solid-state methods, followed by PXRD analysis and comprehensive evaluation of its electrical and thermal properties. With aspirations for professional school and a future in research, he brings enthusiasm, dedication, and an approachable demeanor to the lab. Outside of research, James is an avid runner and outdoor enthusiast, often hiking and canoeing, and has a passion for teaching. He also enjoys automotive work and reading dystopian science fiction, particularly The Maze Runner.

Pauljo Peter
Undergraduate Work Study Student

Hello there, I am Pauljo Peter, third-year mechanical engineering student at University of New Brunswick. I enjoy building things, sports, and films.

Dorinda Brown
Undergraduate CHEM3019 Student

I am Dorinda Brown, I am currently on my final semester at UNB. My project entails synthesizing a large single crystal using a modified technique known as the Bridgeman method. Outside academics, my interests are reading stories, music, and creative arts.

Sienna Horodecki
Undergraduate Research Student

I'm Sienna, and in the lab I am working on the synthesis of large transition metal dichalogenide single crystals at low temperatures. Currently I am a biochem student, but I seek knowledge in a wide array of scientific fields. I am also a very passionate artist, and I love using my understanding of the sciences to build on my understanding of the fundamentals of art. I also love reading, hiking, and spending time with my cats!
